The First Fertility-Friendly Hand Sanitizer For Women and Men after the FDA Banned Certain Harmful Chemicals in Hand Sanitizers
New York, NY – Rejuvenating Fertility Center (RFC) has created a new product called REJOOVA, an organic fertility-friendly hand sanitizer created by Dr. Zaher Merhi, M.D., HCLD, board-certified Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility specialist, in collaboration with Aimee Raupp, a world-renown fertility coach and acupuncturist.
REJOOVA incorporates certified organic ingredients like tea tree to eliminate germs on contact and is free of the type of chemicals, used in most commercial hand sanitizers, which have been proven detrimental to fertility.
Dr. Merhi and Ms. Raupp saw the need for this sanitizer upon realizing that despite FDA regulations banning certain harmful chemicals from hand sanitizers, because of the massive need for sanitizer and the severe shortage during the pandemic, there were multiple brands of hand sanitizers on the market that did in fact contain these harmful chemicals.
One such ingredient is triclosan, a chemical associated with hormone disruption. In a 2020 interview with Health Digest, Dr. Merhi stated that this ingredient can impair fertility in both men and women. A study published by the Environmental Science and Pollution Research (ESPR) found that exposure to the synthetic chemical triclosan resulted in decreased sperm quality and was associated with increase in female infertility.
For men, triclosan has anti-androgenic properties and can disrupt testicular steroidogenesis (i.e., testosterone production inside the testicles). In women, triclosan exposure can cause a diminished ovarian reserve (i.e., low egg quantity). The fact that it can cause lower thyroid hormone levels means that eggs may not even be released during the menstrual cycle. Ovarian steroidogenesis is the process by which ovarian cells produce the hormones needed for maintaining reproductive tissues, regulating ovarian function and ovulation, and thus establishing a normal healthy pregnancy.
While it’s not yet known exactly how much triclosan in the body causes significant negative effects on fertility, as previously mentioned, the FDA did choose to ban this chemical from hand sanitizer. Despite this, the FDA announced in August 2020 that it had seen a “sharp increase” in hand sanitizers that were found to have banned ingredients, despite these ingredients not being listed on the product label. The FDA even had to make a live database of hand sanitizers still using banned ingredients.
With the huge amount of hand sanitizer being purchased and used during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Merhi and Ms. Raupp realized that many consumers were unaware of these banned ingredients being used; and fewer still were aware of the potentially harmful effects these chemicals have on fertility. Thus, they created REJOOVA sanitizer for both women and men.
